Bartholomew Fair, Smithfield. Crowds gather around stalls and fairground rides. Bartholomew fair was held annually, from its establishment in 1133 until it was surpressed in 1855, on the eve of St Batholomew's Day. 24th August. It was originally a cloth fair, but by the seventeeth century it had become more important as a centre of general entertainment. This print was published in The Microcosm of London.
