Engraving by Dore from 'London a Pilgrimage'. The publisher Grant & Co. offered Jerrold and Doré the vast sum of £10,000 a year to complete an overview of London life. Doré produced 180 engravings and the resulting book was issued in parts from January 1872. It was a commercial success, although some criticised its concentration on East End poverty rather than more palatable views of London life. This view shows a three storey building with crowded balconies overlooking the river Thames. A sailling boat can be seen in the distance.
