Charing Cross, Cambridge Circus in smog.
The legendary pea-souper - thick fog that London endured for centuries is illustrated in this photo taken near Cambridge Circus. Standing outside the second-hand booksellers Marks & Co at 84, Charing Cross Road, Wolf Suschitzky captured the atmosphere created by the heavy coal smoke of industry and domestic chimneys.
People appear accustomed to the polluting smog that often surrounded them. However, such fogs did affect routine: poor visibility disrupted transport and consequentially many aspects of every day life in the capital.
Suschitzky worked as a film cameraman in nearby Soho. Between his working hours, he created a series of photos depicting the activity in and around Charing Cross Road.
