Looking southwest from Lower Custom House Stairs. George Davison Reid photographed this scene looking upstream from Lower Custom House Stairs, near Traitors' Gate. Causeways and stairs lined the Thames riverfront, enabling watermen to ferry river workers and passengers in their boats. During the 1930s, Custom House Quay was home to the Dutch company of William H Muller. Steamers carried freight and passengers from there towards Rotterdam. Reid photographed the banks of the Thames extensively during the late 1920s and early 1930s.
