This dramatic drawing captures an eyewitness account of the riots in Brixton during the weekend of 11th April 1981. The artist Mike Hawthorne was in Brixton that Saturday night and produced this drawing in 1987 from sketches he made at the time. It shows the violent disorder which resulted from the breakdown in relations between the police and the local community. Hawthorn spent the first nine years of his life in Nigeria and Sierra Leone and since 1975 has lived and worked in London.
